    Mary Kingston Roche is Director of Public Policy for the Coalition for Community Schools at the Institute for Educational Leadership. 

    As Director of Public Policy, Mary leads the Coalition’s policy and advocacy efforts to promote the community schools approach at the federal and state levels. Community schools is a strategy where schools act as community hubs and organize school and community resources for student success. She also manages the Coalition’s relationship with its over 100 national partners.

    Before coming to IEL, Mary was Manager of Government Relations for the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), where she represented our nation’s secondary school leaders. Mary began her career teaching 6th and 9th grade English for three years in Oakland, California. While there, she led an after-school Dance Club and established an Honor Roll for students to recognize their academic performance.

    Mary received her Master of Public Policy from Duke University and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Boston University, where she also competed on the Division I women’s track and cross-country teams.

    In her spare time, Mary supports the Teen Advisory Committee in her city of Hyattsville, MD, through after-school programming focused on youth advocacy and leadership. She is also a mentor with Capital Partners for Education, a DC nonprofit that matches adults with high school youth for mentorship.
